After the Flag Hoisting, the Race Begins: Kumbh Works 51% Done, March 2027 Deadline, Only 94 Acres of Sadhugram in Hand
Kumbh Mela Authority commissioner Shekhar Singh says about 51% of Kumbh works are done, with March 2027 as the deadline, the Times of India reported late on 31 October. The biggest gap is the Tapovan Sadhugram: NMC holds only 94 of the 1,400-plus acres planned, for up to 10 lakh sadhus. NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri now targets bathing-quality Godavari water by March 2027 and all concrete works by January 2027. REPORTED.

With the flags up, the focus has moved to the work still left before the Amrit Snans of August and September 2027. REPORTED: this is from the Times of India (published 31 October, 11:45 PM IST). We have not seen an official progress report from NTKMA or NMC.
This is a follow-up to our 31 October story, Seers warn they may stay away if Sadhugram shows no progress in a month.
Key numbers
- Overall progress: about 51% of Kumbh-related works are complete, NTKMA commissioner Shekhar Singh told the Times of India. The deadline is March 2027. He said the works will be finished before the three Amrit Snans.
- Total value: nearly ₹35,000 crore of works, a figure Deputy CM Eknath Shinde repeated at the 31 October ceremony (Hindustan Times).
- Sadhugram, Tapovan: authorities now expect nearly 10 lakh sadhus, against about 2 lakh in 2015. The settlement is planned on more than 1,400 acres, but NMC has possession of only 94 acres. The plan needs 191 acres acquired permanently and about 1,100 acres requisitioned temporarily. Land, farmer talks and compensation rates are the critical steps.
- Roads: about 30 roads, nearly 150 km, ₹1,400 crore. The 65 km outer ring road (over ₹7,000 crore) is under construction, but more than half its land is yet to be acquired. The 6 km Nashik-Pune highway stretch from Dwarka Circle to Datta Mandir has not started, though its tender is done.
- Godavari: NMC is building four new sewage treatment plants and laying sewer lines. Kumbh Mela Minister Girish Mahajan cited a ₹2,200 crore Godavari rejuvenation project. NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri said all concrete works will be done by January 2027, and the target is a pollution-free Godavari at bathing quality by March 2027.
What changed from earlier reports
- Godavari deadline: in September, Khatri gave May 2027 for bathing-quality water and the project was reported at ₹1,600 crore (our earlier story). The new target is March 2027, and Mahajan now cites ₹2,200 crore. These figures come from different reports and may count different components.
- Sadhu numbers: the seers spoke of housing 40,000 sadhus; the Times of India report says authorities expect nearly 10 lakh. These may be counting different groups (akhada seers versus all sadhus and followers).
- Sadhugram acres: we earlier reported 191 acres being acquired out of a smaller total (NMC starts acquiring 191 acres). The 1,400-plus acre figure includes the land to be requisitioned temporarily.
Why it matters for pilgrims
The ghats, river quality and the Sadhugram decide how comfortable the 2027 snans will be. If you are planning a trip, the key dates to watch are January 2027 (concrete works) and March 2027 (overall deadline and river quality). Ring road progress: earlier update.
