The Ghats Along the Godavari
Ancient steps descending to India's most sacred southern river
He sacred ghats of Nashik are the spiritual heart of the city, a chain of ancient stone steps descending gracefully into the holy waters of the Godavari River. For millennia, these ghats have been the stage for humanity's most profound act of devotion - the sacred bath, a ritual surrender of the self to the divine, seeking purification, redemption, and the grace of the eternal.
Known as the Dakshin Ganga (Ganga of the South), the Godavari is one of India's seven most sacred rivers. Her waters originate at Trimbakeshwar, just 28 kilometers from Nashik, at the feet of the sacred Brahmagiri hill.
During Kumbh Mela, these ghats transform into an ocean of faith. Millions of pilgrims, saints, naga sadhus, and spiritual seekers converge here for the sacred Shahi Snan (Royal Bath).
