NMC Seeks 8,005 MCFT Water Reservation — About 25% More for Kumbh 2027

Nashik Municipal Corporation has proposed 8,005 MCFT of dam water for 15 Oct 2026–31 Aug 2027 — about 25% above the previous 6,400 MCFT cycle — citing Simhastha demand. Final allocation is due at a meeting chaired by guardian minister Girish Mahajan next week.

Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has sought 8,005 million cubic feet (MCFT) of water for the reservation cycle from 15 October 2026 to 31 August 2027, about 25% higher than the 6,400 MCFT allocated in the previous cycle. The Times of India reported this on 15 October 2026, quoting NMC water-supply superintending engineer Ravindra Dharankar. The proposal is confirmed as submitted; the final quota is not yet decided.

What NMC asked for

Civic officials put the city's routine need in this period at about 7,370 MCFT, plus about 635 MCFT tagged for the Kumbh. Under the proposal the split is:

  • Gangapur dam complex: 5,505 MCFT (still the main source; about 80% of city supply today)
  • Mukane dam: 2,270 MCFT
  • Darna dam: 230 MCFT

In 2025–26 NMC was allocated 6,400 MCFT and used about 6,061 MCFT.

Kumbh-linked projections (as reported)

TOI cites NMC projections of about 10 lakh sadhus at a proposed 1,400-acre Sadhugram needing about 140 million litres a day, and an extra 160 MLD for an expected 8–10 crore pilgrim footfall. Treat those headcount and MLD figures as reported planning estimates, not fixed official caps.

Next step

District guardian minister and Kumbh Mela minister Girish Mahajan is expected to chair the allocation meeting next week. Preparations are also expected to pick up after the 31 October 2026 Dhwajarohan.
