Mahajan Promises All Kumbh Works Before the Amrit Snans as Mahant Sanjay Das Warns Ramkund Steps Could Cause Accidents in Big Crowds

Kumbh Mela Minister Girish Mahajan told seers on 29 October that all key Simhastha works, including Ramkund, Sadhugram and sewage projects, will be finished before the Amrit Snans in August and September 2027, the Times of India reports. He spoke after Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad spokesperson Mahant Sanjay Das inspected Ramkund and the Tapovan Sadhugram site and said the way the new steps were built could cause accidents in a big crowd. Mahajan put sewage and sewer-line works at about ₹2,200 crore and said the government will follow the court on tree felling at Tapovan.

The seers who came for the flag hoisting are now asking hard questions about the works, and the minister has answered on record. REPORTED: this is from the Times of India (29 October). We have not seen an official statement.

This is a follow-up to our 29 October story, Akhada Parishad leaders arrive and demand Sadhugram plots and farmers' compensation.

What Mahant Sanjay Das said

  • Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad spokesperson Mahant Sanjay Das inspected Ramkund and the proposed Sadhugram site at Tapovan with the minister.
  • He questioned both the pace and the quality of the works and said land acquisition for Sadhugram is still not complete.
  • On Ramkund he said: "The manner in which the steps have been constructed raises the possibility of accidents when there is a huge crowd. If the works are not improved, we may have to rethink the Nashik Simhastha."

What Girish Mahajan said

  • Deadline: "there are still nine months to go for the first and second Amrit Snans in Aug and the third in September. All works will be completed before the Amrit Snan days and no work will remain incomplete."
  • Sadhus: all necessary facilities will be provided to sadhus arriving for the Kumbh.
  • Sewage: works worth about ₹2,200 crore are under way, including new sewage treatment plants and sewer lines, to stop sewage reaching the Godavari.
  • Tapovan trees: "We will follow the court's order. If the court directs us not to remove the trees, we will not do so."
