Today, Tuesday 20 October 2026, is Vijayadashami (Dussehra), the date on the central government's 2026 holiday list. Effigies of Ravan will burn across India, but the festival means something particular in Nashik: this is the Panchavati of the Ramayana, and in eleven days, on 31 October, the Simhastha Kumbh flag goes up on the same Godavari bank.
What's on in Nashik today (CONFIRMED)
- Ravan Dahan at Ramtirth-Gangaghat: Ramleela and Ravan Dahan take place on the Ramtirth Gangaghat parking ground. First, a procession of Shri Ram and Lakshman's "sena" leaves Chatussampraday Akhada, via Malegaon Stand, Panchavati Karanja, Malviya Chowk, Shivaji Chowk, Sita Gufa Road, Shri Kalaram temple, Sardar Chowk and Saibaba temple to Ramtirth. (Sakal, Maharashtra Times, Times of India)
- Traffic diversion: from 3 PM to 10 PM the road from Malegaon Stand to Ramkund, Sardar Chowk and Gadge Maharaj bridge (both directions) is closed to all vehicles. Use Malegaon Stand – Panchavati Karanja – Nimani bus stand – Katya Maruti Chowk – Ganeshwadi instead. Police, ambulances and fire engines are exempt. DCP (Traffic) Chandrakant Gawali has warned of action against violators. Navratri mandals also bring their Devi idols to Ramtirth for immersion, so expect heavy crowds.
- Gandhinagar, Nashik Road (REPORTED): the Ramleela Committee will burn a 65-foot Ravan effigy at Ramleela Ground. Organisers say it is the tradition's 71st year and expect more than 30,000 people. (Free Press Journal)
- Timings (REPORTED): NDTV, citing the Hindu calendar, gives Dashami tithi from 12:50 PM today and Pradosh Kaal from 5:47 PM. Local panchangs may differ.
Access around Ramkund is currently restricted in phases for flag-hoisting works (the Ramkund closure story). Check the current ghat access notes before you go.
Panchavati's Ramayana story (tradition)
What follows is religious tradition and Ramayana lore, not historical record.
- Panchavati: devotees believe Rama, Sita and Lakshman lived here during their exile, by the Godavari among five banyan trees, which is where "Pancha-vati" gets its name.
- Tapovan and the name "Nashik": tradition holds that at Tapovan Lakshman cut off Shurpanakha's nose (*nasika* in Sanskrit), and that the city takes its name "Nasik" from it. That episode leads to Sita's abduction and the war with Ravan, so in a sense the Dussehra story begins in Nashik.
- Sita Gufa: a narrow cave shrine in Panchavati. Devotees believe Sita stayed here and that Ravan abducted her from this area. You have to stoop to go in, so older visitors should take care.
- Kalaram temple: known for its black-stone idols of Rama, Lakshman and Sita, and built in the late 18th century. Dr B.R. Ambedkar's 1930 temple-entry satyagraha was fought over this temple. Today's procession passes right in front of it.
- Ramkund: tradition says Rama bathed here, which is why Nashik's Amrit Snan during the Simhastha takes place at Ramkund.
What it means for Kumbh 2027 pilgrims
- Flag hoisting, 31 October 2026, 12:02 PM: at Ramkund (Nashik) and Kushavarta (Trimbakeshwar) at the same moment, as set out in the NTKMA's official plan (flag-hoisting programme).
- Amrit Snan: 2 August 2027 (first), 31 August 2027 (second), and the third on 11 September in Nashik and 12 September 2027 in Trimbakeshwar. All dates and tithis are on the dates page.
- A Panchavati circuit: most pilgrims go from a dip at Ramkund to Kalaram darshan, Sita Gufa and then Tapovan. Everything except Tapovan is within walking distance. During the Kumbh there will be crowd and traffic controls, so follow the official advisories then.
Dussehra is one of the three-and-a-half most auspicious days (sade-teen muhurat) in Maharashtra, and many families start a marriage search on it; a biodata can be made at BiodataJi.
Happy Dussehra from Nashik.
