Mobility Planning for Simhastha Focuses on Rural Connectivity

A comprehensive rural connectivity plan has been unveiled for Simhastha 2027, including bus station renovations and new routes connecting remote villages to Kumbh sites.

While much of the Kumbh infrastructure focus has been on Nashik city, a comprehensive mobility plan has been unveiled that places special emphasis on rural connectivity, ensuring that devotees from remote villages and smaller towns in the Nashik division have seamless access to the Kumbh Mela sites. The plan, developed by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) in coordination with the district administration, covers a network spanning over 1,200 kilometers of rural routes.

The Nashik Central Bus Station, known as the Mahamarg Bus Stand, will undergo a complete renovation costing Rs 180 crore. The upgraded facility will feature climate-controlled waiting areas, digital route information displays, automated ticketing kiosks, and dedicated bays for Kumbh shuttle services. Satellite bus stations at Panchavati, Satpur, and Gangapur will also be upgraded to handle overflow traffic.

A key innovation is the introduction of a hub-and-spoke bus network where rural feeder buses from tehsil-level towns will connect to express shuttle services running between major Kumbh venues. Over 350 new bus routes have been planned, covering areas like Igatpuri, Dindori, Niphad, Sinnar, and Surgana - regions that are home to large tribal and farming communities who form a significant portion of local Kumbh pilgrims.

The rural mobility plan also includes improvements to over 500 kilometers of village roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, installation of bus shelters with solar lighting at 800 rural stops, and a mobile app that will provide real-time bus tracking and seat availability for rural routes. Special attention is being given to accessibility, with low-floor buses and wheelchair-accessible vehicles deployed on key routes to ensure that the Kumbh experience is truly inclusive.
